Facebook Could be the First to be Affected by GDPR

Recently Facebook has been in hot water due to a serious data breach and earlier this week; we’ve seen Mark Zuckerberg face the high courts to discuss how he plans to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future.

Mark took the stage to represent his company, he survived the two-day long trial, but if he isn’t prepared for GDPR; he could be fined up to 4% of the companies yearly revenue.

In case you missed it…

Earlier this week; Facebook had been called to testify to Congress and the question of whether U.S. politicians might introduce new regulations of Facebook’s privacy and data sharing practices. This trial is due to a data breach that leaked user data for an estimation of up to 87 million people. This information collected through a popular quiz app had been shared with Cambridge Analytica who worked with President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign, they then reportedly used the information to build psychological profiles to target voters with ads.

The U.S. battle is over, but the EU battle is about to start. Next month, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force, meaning Facebook will have to make major changes to avoid huge fines. Of course, this regulation won’t only affect Facebook, but other tech giants such as Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft are also expected to face GDPR’s set fines.

Are you ready for GDPR?

GDPR isn’t exclusive to tech giants, in fact; the GDPR will affect all businesses within the EU, are you prepared?
